  1. Navigate to MyAccount then enter your CNetID and password.
  2. Complete the 2FA if prompted with this page.

The next page will display your current mail forwarding configuration and options.

  5. Forward your Email by following the instructions that are provided to you. If you have Office 365 provisioned, you must follow the Option One instructions below. If you have University G Suite and wish to start reading your mail at your University Gmail account or you have email forwarding but no email storage account, you must follow the Option Two instructions.

Option One: Forward Office 365 to UChicago Gmail or to a Personal Account.

If you see the message Your email address is currently being routed to Office 365, you will need to visit Office 365 portal (portal.office.com) to forward your email from O365 to your desired email account—either UChicago Gmail (part of the G Suite) or an outside email account of your choice.
Information on current account routing location

  1. Navigate to the Office 365 portal (portal.office.com) and enter your University email address (i.e., CNetID@uchicago.edu). Be sure to use the email address associated with your CNetID and not an alias, departmental, or unaffiliated account.
  2. You will be redirected to the single-sign-on page to authenticate with your CNetID and password and your 2FA device if necessary.

  3. Next, you will be redirected to the UChicago Office 365 portal.
  4. Select the Outlook app.

  6. Choose your View all Outlook Settings at the bottom of the list.
    Outlook settings section
  7. Select Mail and then Forwarding from the left sidebar.
    Forwarding page within Outlook
  8. Click on the box Enable Forwarding and then enter the email address to which you would like your email to forward. Do not select Keep a copy of forwarded messages.

Tip: If you plan to forward to UChicago Gmail, enter your UChicago Gmail address with "g." before the uchicago.edu, as in: CNetID@g.uchicago.edu).

  9. Once you have selected your desired configuration, click Save.
  10. Send a test email to your UChicago email account, then visit your selected forwarding destination to confirm the change was successful. You should see the test email in your inbox. Note: if you have set your forwarding to Gmail, you must use a different email account (not the Gmail account to which you set your email to forward) to test the forwarding.

Alert: Changing your forwarding address will not migrate any previously received emails to your newly specified inbox.

Note: You may not forward your @uchicago.edu address to another individual who is affiliated with the University and has an @uchicago.edu address. For more information on email at the University read the Email Overview.

Option Two: Forward to UChicago Gmail or a Personal Account.

If you do not have Office 365 provisioned or have email forwarding rather than a full email storage account (alumni, for example, will see this option if they choose to set up their email forwarding after their account services have closed) this is the option you will see from the Email Forwarding section of the MyAccount website. Please note that it can take up to an hour for your forwarding to be set.

  1. Under Preferred Destination section, select either UChicago Gmail or User Defined. Use the UChicago Gmail option if you have been provisioned with University G Suite and want to begin to receive your email through Gmail. Use User Defined if an outside address is where you would like to read your email.
  2. If you are forwarding to a user defined address, enter the new email address.
  3. Save your changes.
  4. Send a test email to your UChicago email account, then visit your selected forwarding destination to confirm the change was successful. You should see the test email in your inbox. Note: if you have set your forwarding to Gmail, you must use a different email account (not the Gmail account to which you set your email to forward) to test the forwarding.

End or Modify your Email Forwarding

To stop forwarding your email or to send your email to a different address:

  1. Navigate to MyAccount and enter your CNetID and password.
  2. Click Go To MyAccount.
  3. Select Email Forwarding.

Your results page will tell you whether you have Office 365 provisioned or not.

If you have Office 365, please follow the instructions for Option One listed above to find where your email is currently being forwarded. You may either modify the address to which your email forwards if you wish or you may remove the forwarding by unchecking the Enable forwarding box and selecting save at the bottom of the page.
Mail forwarding checkbox selected

  1. If you have University G Suite or email forwarding, please follow the instructions for Option Two above to find where your email is currently being forwarded.
  2. You may select the radio button located next to the User Defined option in order to send your email to a different user-defined account or to send your email to your UChicago Gmail account, if you are provisioned (eligible) for G Suite.
  3. If you are electing to send to a non-University user-defined account, type in the address to which your email will forward. Click at the bottom of the page.

Note to alumni: At this time, you cannot turn off @uchicago.edu forwarding once you have activated it. If you wish to disable email forwarding from your University address, please submit a request to alumni-support@uchicago.edu. If you need help at any point during the transition, contact IT Services or call 773.702.5800 for assistance.

Mail Forwarding During Account Closure

If you set or change your email forwarding address once your account has entered the closure process, it may take up to a day for the new forwarding to become effective. Please continue to check your email at your previous account until you can verify that the new forwarding address is working to avoid missing email messages.

Restart Email Forwarding After Account Closure

If your account has been closed and you are a UChicago alumnus/alumna, your email address and forwarding privileges are maintained. However, if you are not an alumnus/alumna and your account is closed, your email forwarding preferences will be erased. For example, if you are a student who has taken multiple quarters off, your account services closed, and then you return to the University, you may find that your email forwarding is no longer in place. In that case, you must reset your email preferences. Please begin at the Setup Email Forwarding section to set up your email preferences.
