What is Tableau?
Tableau is a leading Business Intelligence platform that focuses on data visualization, dashboard creation, and data discovery. The Tableau platform includes Tableau Prep, Tableau Desktop, and Tableau Server. For full descriptions and to learn more, please visit What is Tableau?
Tableau Desktop
Tableau Desktop is an application installed locally where all development is performed. This includes but is not limited to:
- Connecting to Data
- Creating Visualizations
- Calculated Fields
- Dashboard creation
- View and Dashboard Publishing
The current version of Tableau Desktop compatible with our Tableau Server is Tableau 2021.2.7.
Tableau Server
Tableau Server is a secure way to share dashboards that have been authored in Tableau Desktop. After publishing your dashboard to Tableau Server, it can be shared across departments, and throughout your business. Other features include:
- Dashboard Publishing and Sharing
- Certified Data Sources
- Data Alerts
- Commenting
Tableau Prep
Tableau Prep is a personal data preparation tool that allows a user the ability to cleanse, aggregate, merge, or otherwise prepare their data for analysis in Tableau.

Costs
Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep
Tableau licensees for Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep are based on a yearly subscription model. Please contact Tableau directly or feel free to contact IT Services at tableau-support@lists.uchicago.edu for further information and pricing.
Students
- Students may be eligible for a free one-year license to activate Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep.

Faculty
- Faculty/instructors may qualify for free licenses through the Tableau for Teaching program, you must teach at an accredited academic institution and/or conduct noncommercial academic research at an accredited academic institution.
