Forwarding your CNetID@uchicago.edu email to another account can simplify where you read your messages if you are a current faculty, student, or staff member who has multiple email accounts. This article will help you learn more about email forwarding.
Set Up Email Forwarding
Please note that there may be important messages that are marked as spam if you forward your University email from Microsoft 365 to Gmail. More information is available here: Email Forwarding from Microsoft 365 to Gmail Alert
To forward your email, you will need your CNetID and password, which will be used to log in to MyAccount (myaccount.uchicago.edu).
- Navigate to MyAccount then enter your CNetID and password, and complete 2FA if prompted.
- Select Go To MyAccount.
- Select Email Forwarding.
The next page displays your current mail forwarding configuration and options.
- Forward your Email by following the instructions that are provided to you. If you have Microsoft 365 provisioned, you must follow the Option One instructions below. If you have University Google Workspace and wish to start reading your mail at your University Gmail account or you have email forwarding but no email storage account, you must follow the Option Two instructions.
Option One: Forward Microsoft 365 to UChicago Gmail or to a Personal Account.
If you see the message Your email address is currently being routed to Microsoft 365, you will need to visit Microsoft 365 portal (portal.office.com) to forward your email from Microsoft 365 to your desired email account—either UChicago Gmail (part of the Google Workspace) or an outside email account of your choice.
Preferred Method:
- Select the Office 365 hyperlink located at the end of the "You can forward..." paragraph.
- Log in using your CNetID credentials.
- Automatically, the Email Forwarding dialog box appears on the screen.
- Select the box Enable Forwarding and then enter the email address to which you would like your email to forward. Do not select Keep a copy of forwarded messages.
Tip: If you plan to forward to UChicago Gmail, enter your UChicago Gmail address with "g." before the uchicago.edu, as in CNetID@g.uchicago.edu.
- Once you have selected your desired configuration, select Save.
- Send a test email to your UChicago email account, then visit your selected forwarding destination to confirm the change was successful. You should see the test email in your inbox. Note: If you have set your forwarding to Gmail, you must use a different email account to test the forwarding and not the Gmail account to which you set your email to forward.
Secondary Method:
- Navigate to Microsoft 365 portal (portal.office.com) and enter your University email address (i.e., CNetID@uchicago.edu). Be sure to use the email address associated with your CNetID and not an alias, departmental, or unaffiliated account.
- You will be redirected to the single-sign-on page to authenticate with your CNetID and password and your 2FA device if necessary.
- Next, you will be redirected to the UChicago Microsoft 365 portal.
- Select the Outlook app.
- Choose the gear icon at the upper right of the page.
- Select Mail and then Forwarding from the left sidebar.
- Select the Enable Forwarding box and then enter the email address to which you would like your email to forward.
Alert: Changing your forwarding address will not migrate any previously received emails to your newly specified inbox.
Note: You may not forward your @uchicago.edu address to another individual who is affiliated with the University and has an @uchicago.edu address. For more information on email at the University read the Email Overview.
Option Two: Forward to UChicago Gmail or a Personal Account.
If you do not have Microsoft 365 provisioned or have email forwarding rather than a full email storage account this is the option you will see from the Email Forwarding section of the MyAccount website. Alumni, for example, will see this option if they choose to set up their email forwarding after their account services have closed. Please note that it can take up to an hour for your forwarding to be set.
- Under Preferred Destination section, select either UChicago Gmail or User Defined. Use the UChicago Gmail option if you have been provisioned with University Google Workspace and want to begin receiving your email through Gmail. Use User Defined if an outside address is where you would like to read your email.
- If you are forwarding to a user-defined address, enter the new email address.
- Save your changes.
- Send a test email to your UChicago email account, then visit your selected forwarding destination to confirm the change was successful. You should see the test email in your inbox. Note: if you have set your forwarding to Gmail, you must use a different email account (not the Gmail account to which you set your email to forward) to test the forwarding.

Note to alumni: At this time, you cannot turn off @uchicago.edu forwarding once you have activated it. If you wish to disable email forwarding from your University address, please submit a request to alumnitechsupport@uchicago.edu. If you need help at any point during the transition, contact IT Services or call 773.702.5800 for assistance.

Mail Forwarding During Account Closure
If you set or change your email forwarding address once your account has entered the closure process, it may take up to a day for the new forwarding to become effective. Please continue to check your email at your previous account until you can verify that the new forwarding address is working to avoid missing email messages.
Restart Email Forwarding After Account Closure
If your account has been closed and you are a UChicago alumnus/alumna, your email address and forwarding privileges are maintained. However, if you are not an alumnus/alumna and your account is closed, your email forwarding preferences will be erased. For example, if you are a student who has taken multiple quarters off, your account services closed, and then you return to the University, you may find that your email forwarding is no longer in place. In that case, you must reset your email preferences. Please begin at the Setup Email Forwarding section to set up your email preferences.
