IT Services offers two paging services to faculty and staff of the University of Chicago who hold a valid CNetID and password:
- Alpha Numeric messaging is able to receive written messages directly to a word-messaging device.
- Numeric messaging can send numeric messages or codes up to 20 characters.
Available pagers, service plans, and charges vary based on paging options. This service is available 24 hours a day.

How do I use the covering and referral options?
In Covering mode, calls for your pager are forwarded to another pager. The second pager is now covering for the first pager.
In Referral mode, calls to a pager are referred to a telephone. The caller must hang up and dial the telephone number.

How do I create a password?
Password protection is available to protect unauthorized access to additional options and changing status. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that all pager holders use a password.
Once you select a password (up to seven digits), you must enter it in the future before the system will allow access to the Additional Options menu. Because you alone enter your password, and only you can change it, complete security is assured.
To create or change a password:
- Dial your pager number.
- When you hear To access personal options press the * key and enter your 4-digit ID number.
- When you are prompted for a password enter your 4-digit ID number or if you have created a password enter the number you have created followed by the # sign.
- When you hear To change your password, press 4.
- When you hear To change your password, press 1.
- Once you set your password you will be required to enter that password in order to access your personal options in the future.
How do I record a personal greeting?
When using the Personal Greeting option, callers will hear your personal greeting rather than your status code.
To record a Personal Greeting:
- Dial your pager number.
- When you hear, "To access personal options," press the * key and enter your 4-digit ID number.
- When you are prompted for a password enter your 4-digit ID number or if you have created a password enter the number you have created followed by the # sign.
- When you hear, "To change a personal greeting," press 6.
- When you hear, "To record a personal greeting," press 1.
- When you hear, "Please speak your personal greeting," speak your personal greeting then press # when finished.
To change or delete your personal greeting at any time, please follow the same set of instructions and the system will prompt you.
How do I record a spoken name?
When using the Spoken Name option, callers will hear your spoken name, or department name (i.e., on-call pager rather than your pager ID #).
To record your name:
- Dial your pager number.
- When you hear, "To access personal options," press the * key and enter your 4-digit ID number.
- When you are prompted for a password, enter your 4-digit ID number or if you have created a password enter the number you have created followed by the # sign.
- When you hear, "To record a spoken name," press 5.
- When you hear, "To record a spoken name," press 1.
- Record your spoken name, then press #.
To change or delete your Spoken Name at any time, please follow the same set of instructions and the system will prompt you.
How do I hear a list of status codes?
- Dial your pager number.
- When you hear, "To access personal options," press the * key and enter your 4-digit ID number.
- When you are prompted for a password, enter your 4-digit ID number, or if you have created a password, enter the number you have created followed by the # sign.
- When you hear, "To hear a list of status codes," press 2.
- You will hear:
- 0 - Messaging being blocked
- 2 - In hospital on page
- 3 - On page
- 4 - Out of hospital on page
- 5 - Messages are being stored
- 7 - On page
- 8 - Out not available
- If you wish to change your status code, when you hear, "To change your status," press 1.
- Enter the number that corresponds to the status code you wish to set then press #.
How do I retrieve and review my messages?
You can retrieve and review your messages through the direct-dial menu.
- Dial your pager number.
- When you hear, "To access personal options," press the * key and enter your 4-digit ID number.
- When you are prompted for a password, enter your 4-digit ID number or if you have created a password enter the number you have created followed by the # sign.
- When you hear, "To review messages," press 1.
- Press 1 to hear your next message
If you have messages, you will be prompted to play them. After each message is played, you have the option to repeat it or wait and repeat all the messages. All messages that have been played are deleted when you exit the system.
