I have a VHS and/or DVD from another country. Will I be able to play it in a media classroom?

The majority of our media classrooms are equipped with region-free DVD players that handle most flavors of PAL and NTSC. VHS decks are no longer available, but contact us to have any VHS tapes digitized.

Can I plug my laptop computer into your media racks?

Yes, all of our media classrooms have HDM, VGA, or USB-C cables in the cabinet. If you use a Mac, you will need the adapter that is shipped with your laptop to plug into the VGA or HDMI cable. Also, some Windows laptops are shipped with an adapter to attach to a VGA cable. If you need an adapter, send an email to avs@uchicago.edu to arrange to borrow an adapter.

My laptop runs Windows 2000/XP/7/8/10. Can I connect it to your media cabinet?

You can try. We recommend Windows 10 and higher.

I use a laptop that runs Linux. Can I connect it to your media cabinet?

Linux is not a supported operating system, but you are welcome to try connecting it to the media cabinet.

Why can't I get the picture from my laptop to show up on the monitor/screen?

If you're using a Mac laptop, after you connect the VGA or HDMI cable to the media cabinet, go to the System Preferences > Display > Detect Displays.

If you using a Windows laptop, after you connect the appropriate cable (e.g., VGA, HDMI, USB-C), Windows should detect the monitor and display what's on your screen. If this doesn't happen, make sure the monitor is set to the correct input. If you're still not seeing an image on the monitor, go to the Windows Display Settings on your laptop. Select Start > Settings > System > Display, then click on Detect to get your laptop to recognize the monitor. If these instructions do not work, you should check with the computer manufacturer for assistance.

I've never used a media rack before. Can you show me how to use it?

Absolutely, just call us at 773.834.4499 and we can schedule training in one of our classrooms or in our office.
