Data Usage Request (DUR) Overview

The Data Usage Council is stewarded by the Chicago Privacy Office. Please see the Data Usage Council website (dsc.uchicago.edu) or email William Greenland for more information.

The Data Stewardship Council provides a standard form to coordinate data requests from various University sources. You can download the Data Usage Request (DUR) form to submit your request. Once it's completed, print it, and have it signed by the requester. Now, the requestor can email the DUR to the appropriate data steward(s) who will grant permission to the requestor to use the data. Copy the DUR mailing list (datausagerequest@lists.uchicago.edu) on the email request to the data steward(s) and on all correspondence with them. The data steward list may also be used for support and advice from the Data Stewardship Council.

A data steward may approve, deny, or approve some, but not all the fields or types of data you have requested. For example, a requestor may get permission to receive a business address but not a home address or to get data for undergraduate students but not for graduate students. Photos must be requested as a separate data element as they are considered highly sensitive data. Faculty and others may opt out of sharing their photos.

IT Services can assist requesting departments in understanding specific data, data sources, and technical issues. However, the requesting department is responsible for initiating and submitting the DUR to the data stewards.

Note: Data about postdocs require approval from both staff and faculty data stewards.
