Short-Term Access Card Overview

Policy

The Short-Term Access (STA) program provides building access to visitors on campus who require access for two weeks or less, or to employees who need to move into their office space prior to their start date. During the normal course of business, the ID & Privileges Office (IPO) should be used to request and receive University identity cards. However, the need for short-term access outside of the IPO’s business hours occasionally arises, and this program accommodates such needs.

Visitors using an STA card may not share or loan it or share the access that it provides with others. It does, however, remain the property of the University. It must be shown on demand and returned to the department after it is no longer required. It is not transferable under any conditions. Each person with a Short-Term Access Card should always carry another form of government photo identification while at the University. This identification must be produced upon request along with their STA card.

Rules and Usage

STA cards can be distributed to campus visitors who have a relationship with your department. STA cards are not for use by people who are eligible for a UChicago Card, except as a short-term measure to allow campus access before a new employee is eligible to get the UChicago card. It is the responsibility of the local departmental STA Administrator to manage and monitor their cards.

Cost of Cards

The department will be charged $25 for each card.

How to Request

Departmental administrators or other appropriate staff should complete this downloadable Short Term Access Request Form then send it to the ID & Privileges Office at ipo@uchicago.edu.

Building Access

The local building manager will need to provide access to the STA via CBORD-Access or Continuum applications.

Information to be collected by the department's STA Administrator from the Sponsor or Visitor:

* This information is stored locally with the department and not in the STA database.

Note: STA cards may be re-used by the department, and are not specific to a person. The department can store the other information independently of the STA interface.
