Use this FAQ to get the most from your Cisco Unity Connection voicemail system.
Everyone with a University telephone uses the Cisco Unity Connection voicemail system. To access your voicemail:

Phone lines will be equipped with voicemail service upon request.
Both your extension and voicemail box number are the last five digits of your telephone number. For example, if your telephone number is 773.702.1234, your extension and voicemail box number is 2-1234.
Your PIN is a six- to ten-digit number of your choice. When you access your voicemail box for the first time, your temporary PIN is 26986. For security reasons, you will be prompted to change it.
If you don't know your PIN or want to reset it to something else please contact IT Services at 773.702.5800, option 1, option 1, option 1, or go to IP Phone Call Manager.
If you know your PIN and want to reset it, you can do it from your phone.
The system locks after three attempts. Wait 15 minutes before you try entering your PIN again, or contact IT Services to reset your PIN immediately.
If you are placing calls between these two locations, you can use four-digit extensions.
If you are accessing voicemail from your own desk phone, or another subscriber's desk phone, use the Voicemail option. If you're not using a desk phone, dial 773.702.6986 and enter the 10-digit phone number when you are prompted to enter an extension.

When you log in to your mailbox for the first time, the voicemail tutorial will guide you through setting up your mailbox, personalizing it with your greeting, recording your name, and setting your PIN. You must complete the entire tutorial to properly initialize the mailbox. You cannot reactivate the tutorial, but you can press 4 to go to Setup Options and 1 to re-record your name and personal greeting.

Voicemail messages can be automatically sent to your UChicago email. To learn more, view SpeechView Overview and FAQ.
You may set up six greetings: standard, closed, alternate, busy, internal, and holiday.
There is no voicemail message limit. Messages are also sent to your UChicago email and there, you are only restricted by the size of your email inbox.
The system does not store messages. Your email inbox stores your messages, which can be deleted as you choose.
If you have a folder for deleted messages in your email, you may retrieve deleted messages from there. Otherwise, a deleted message cannot be retrieved.

When a caller gets your voicemail, it's possible for your greeting to direct the caller to press 0 for an Operator/Assistant to direct their call to someone else. To find out if you currently have this option, determine what number it's directed to, or to request this service, please contact IT Services.
Open the WAV (.wav) file in your email message. You can play, pause, skip, and so on using the media player controls.
Press the # key to skip the greeting, then leave your message after the tone.
