Register Your Smartphone in Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

To improve the security of your CNetID, set up your smartphone to use two-factor authentication (2FA) and ensure you're the only one who can access your account, even if someone knows your password.

  1. To enroll in 2FA, visit 2fa.uchicago.edu and select Go to Two-Factor.

  4. Select the Mobile Phone option, then select Continue. You can find information on the use of tokens in the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) FAQ.
  5. Enter your mobile phone number and select Continue.
  6. Select your device's operating system and select Continue
  7. You will be prompted to download the Duo Mobile App to your phone, either through the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android).
  8. Confirm you have installed the app on your phone by checking the box at the bottom of the screen, then select Continue.
  9. The Duo barcode appears on the next screen. Open the Duo Mobile app on your smartphone and scan the barcode.
  10. Follow the prompts, then scan the barcode displayed on your computer screen using your phone's camera. If you are reactivating your phone, select the plus sign in the upper right corner in the Duo mobile app. Under Add account, tap the Use QR code option.

When the barcode is scanned correctly, you will see an acknowledgment (shown below) that your device has been successfully registered. Select Enroll Another Device to enroll another device.

  11. If you choose not to enroll another device at this time, select Done. However, you are strongly encouraged to register more than one device in case you lose your device or don't have it with you when you need it. See the What if I lose my phone? section in the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) FAQ to learn what to do if your device(s) is missing.
