Change Preferred Name in Gmail


By default, the name attached to your University Google Workspace account will match your legal name. Your legal name is your name as written on your birth certificate or other state-issued documentation. To change your legal name, you must fulfill your state's requirements for completing a name change.

A preferred name is often an abbreviated name or a nickname. Preferred names can be updated freely within your Directory entry by visiting the Directory website.

The following instructions will allow you to edit the name used to send emails regardless of your University legal name or preferred name.

  1. Navigate to https://mail.google.com/ using your web browser.
  2. Choose Settings (the gear icon). 
  3. Select the See All Settings button at the top of the settings list, then choose the Accounts and Import tab from the next window.
  4. Within the Send Mail As section, select edit info.
  5. Your previous or default display name will be listed above an empty text box. Use the blank field to add a new display name.
  6. Select Save Changes to finalize the change.
