Data Center Overview

Data Center Services often receives requests for collocation services, rental space to house departmental servers, and computing hardware. UChicago has five data centers across campus. The following describes the features of each data center and includes a comparison chart to help you determine which data center may best fit your need.

The 1155 Data Center

The 1155 Data Center is the current production computer room, covering over 4,100 square feet. The center provides raised floor space for the central IT Services applications infrastructure. New cabinet architecture is currently being implemented in the data center.

Features of the 1155 Data Center include:

The Hinds Data Center

Note: IT Services jointly manages the Hinds Data Center with the Physical Sciences Division.

The Hinds Data Center covers 4,500 square feet. Hosting is limited only by the overall room power and cooling capacities. There is 160 tons of cooling capacity from an independent, roof mounted chiller and dry cooler. Cooling is provided by in-row units versus traditional air circulating under a raised floor. Air is circulated horizontally around the server racks by the in-row cooling units. Racks will have empty spaces blocked with face-panels in order to optimize air flow.

Features of the Hinds Data Center include:

The 6045: POD-A Data Center

The POD-A Data Center is situated in one of the University's historical buildings constructed in 1913. This data center is the primary administrative data center and a Tier-2 facility. IT Services has relocated core systems into this space from the 1155 Data Center. POD-A not only supports business critical systems, but also a facility which can house systems that may fall under certain federal guidelines (FERPA, CJIS, PCI, HIPAA, etc.) The data center is designed and tested to withstand extended power outages without system or service interruption.

Built as a secure facility where systems are managed for system owners, the current 6045 space supports 72 computer cabinets. Cabinet power ratings range from 0–15kW/cabinet.

Features of the 6045: POD-A Data Center include:

The 6045: POD-B & POD-C Data Center

The POD-B Data Center is located adjacent to the 6045 POD-A Data Center. The POD-B Data Center serves Research, High Performance Compute, and Big Data demands for the University. The new space functions as collocation facility for University faculty and departments with such needs. The POD-B Data Center is serviced by a UPS only, thus critical power or cooling events will require load shedding and possibly a total shut down if critical services cannot be restored. The data center will provide campus with 85 cabinets each supporting a 25 kW, 240/415v load capacity.

Features of the 6045: POD-B Data Center include:
