View and Manage Your Email Quarantine

The University provides an email protection service for @uchicago.edu email accounts to identify and block spam as well as to protect accounts from phishing attempts and malicious email content. Through this service, you have several options to manage your email from your Quarantine Email Digest or online Quarantine. To access your Quarantine, visit spam.uchicago.edu and log in with your CNetID and password.

Release Emails from Quarantine

If you would like an email to be released from your Quarantine and delivered to your inbox, use the following steps. Note: Messages in your Quarantine expire after 14 days, so you will need to take action before this time period or the email will be deleted.

From your Quarantine Email Digest: Select the Release link next to the appropriate message.

From your Quarantine: Select the message and click Release. You can select multiple messages at a time.

Allow or Block Email Senders

The Safe Senders List is a list of approved senders of email. When a sender address is included in the Safe Senders List, the email protection service does not filter the sender's messages for spam; however, they will still be filtered for malicious content.

From your Quarantine Email Digest: To mark an email address as safe, select the Allow Sender link next to the appropriate message.

From your Quarantine: Select the message and select Allow Sender to release the selected message from the Quarantine and allow future messages from the sender to be delivered. You can select multiple messages at a time.

The Blocked Senders List contains sender addresses of people or mailing lists from whom you do not wish to receive email.

From your Quarantine Email Digest: To mark an email address as blocked, select the Block Sender link next to the appropriate message.

From your Quarantine: Select the message then select Block Sender to delete the message from the Quarantine and block future messages from the sender. You can select multiple message at a time.

Manage Your Mailing List's Quarantine

To access the email Quarantine for your UChicago mailing list, visit spam.uchicago.edu and log in with your CNetID and password.

Next to your personal email account, you will see a drop-down menu. From here, select the name of the mailing list you want to view.

You can follow the same steps as noted previously to manage your messages and sender lists.

If you are an owner of a UChicago mailing list (hosted on lists.uchicago.edu) and do not see your list included in your account, you may not be the list's email protection delegate.

Although UChicago lists may have multiple owners, only one owner is designated as the email protection delegate for each list. This delegate is able to manage the mailing list's Quarantine. By default, the list owner listed first alphabetically by CNetID is the email protection delegate.

If you want to change the email protection delegate for your list, contact IT Services.

Additional Quarantine Functions

From the menu bar in your Quarantine, you can find options to change your preferences, manage your lists, and refresh your messages.

The Options drop-down menu in the menu bar provides the following choices:

Lists and Profile

From the left navigation, you can manage your Lists and Profile.

Select Lists to manage your Safe Senders and Blocked Senders lists.

To add a new sender, select New, type in the sender email address, and select Save. You can also add a domain to your Safe or Blocked Senders Lists. For example, if you wanted to allow all email from Stanford University, you could add the domain stanford.edu to your Safe Senders List.

To make changes to an email address in your Safe or Blocked Senders Lists, select the email address and choose Edit to revise the address or Delete to remove it from your list.

Finally, select Profile in the menu bar to change your preferences. To stop receiving Quarantine Email Digests, uncheck Send email with new messages in my Quarantine.

If you would like to disable Low Priority Mail filtering so you will no longer have mass marketing emails captured in your Quarantine, you can make that change here.

Under the Preferred Language settings, you will find the section: What type of email protection do you want? Please select an option from the list below. Choose Spam protection only - turn off Low Priority Mail filtering, then click Save.
