Service Overview
The Teleworker service is offered to address the increasing demand to support University faculty and staff who work from home. For many, working efficiently from home requires the use of a VoIP phone, a computer, and a secure way to connect to the campus network. The Teleworker service meets these requirements and will allow you to work as if you're actually in the office.
The Teleworker service uses a Cisco Meraki Z3 (Z3) and/or a Cisco Meraki MX64 (MX64 - w/ PoE injector for phone) device that includes a firewall, virtual private network (VPN), and router. For a fee, IT Services provides you with the Meraki device and a VoIP telephone. You are responsible for securing a home internet service provider (ISP) for connectivity and ensuring the ISP provided the proper wiring to support the device.

Installation Instructions for Meraki Z3
All Meraki Z3 switches must have an IP address and an internet connection to register to the cloud. The Z3 is configured to obtain an IP address automatically from your ISP's router/modem via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
To ensure your Z3 receives an IP address, follow these instructions:
- Remove the Z3, power cable, and Ethernet cable from the box.
- Connect the supplied Ethernet cable to Port 1/internet port on the Z3 to your home internet gateway (router, gateway, etc.) Ethernet port. DHCP must be enabled for your home internet gateway for the Z3 to obtain an IP and connect to the cloud.
Notes:
- If you require assistance with configuring your device, please contact your ISP for support.
- Ports 2, 3, and 4 are for authorized desktops and laptops. (Data ports are not enabled for UChicago Medicine's teleworkers.)
Tip: Computers connected to the three data ports must be configured for DHCP. Consult your desktop support team for instructions on how to configure the computer for DHCP.
- Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to Port 5/VoIP port and the other end to the Network (10/100/100 SW) port on the back of your Cisco VoIP phone. The phone should start booting once the connections are completed. If the phone display doesn't light up or indicate changes, check the cables to ensure you have plugged them into the correct ports.
Note: The Computer and AUX ports on the phone are disabled for Teleworker users.
- Wait for the Z3 front panel LED status light to cycle from multi-color to solid white. When everything is properly connected, all connected device ports on the Z3 should be green on the upper left port LED and blinking green on the upper port LED.
Installation Instructions for Meraki MX64
All Meraki MX64 switches must have an IP address and Internet connection to register to the cloud. The MX64 is configured to obtain an IP address automatically from the end user’s ISP router/modem via DHCP. Following the instructions below should ensure that the MX64 receives the IP address.
Complete the following steps to set up the Meraki MX64:
- Remove the MX64 router, power cable, and Ethernet cable from the box.
- Connect the supplied Ethernet cable to the internet Port on the MX64 to your home internet gateway (router or gateway,) Ethernet port.
Tip: DHCP must be enabled for your home internet gateway for the MX64 to obtain an IP and connect to the cloud.
NOTE: Support for configuring an MX64 user's ISP router is outside the scope of this document and deployment.
- Connect one end of an ethernet cable of the Power Injector that is connected on port 1, and bring the other ethernet cable and plug it into the back of the phone on the leftmost side port as illustrated below. The phone should start booting once the connections are completed.
- If the phone display doesn’t light or indicate changes, check the cabling to ensure you have plugged it into the correct ports.
Note: The computer and AUX port on the phone will be disabled for Teleworker users.
- Ports 2, 3, and 4 of the MX64 are for authorized desktops and laptops (data ports are not enabled for UC Hospital Teleworkers).
- Computers connected to the three data ports must be configured for DHCP. Consult your desktop support team for instructions on how to configure the computer for DHCP.
- Wait for MX64 front panel LED status light to cycle from multicolor light to solid white.
Tip: When everything is operating properly, all connected device ports on the MX64 should be green on the upper left port LED and blinking green on the upper port LED.
