Remove Email Forwarding and Read Your Email Using Microsoft Outlook


Microsoft Outlook is the email application that comes with Microsoft 365 Suite. Faculty, students, and staff often forward their University email to external email accounts instead of using Microsoft Outlook for email. If you are currently forwarding your email and want to switch to Microsoft Outlook, follow these instructions:

  1. Navigate to the Microsoft 365 Portal (portal.office.com) then enter your email address (i.e., CNetID@uchicago.edu) and password. Select Next.
    Tip: Do not use an alias, departmental, or unaffiliated account.

    You will see a message saying, "Taking you to your sign-in page." 
  2. You will be redirected to the UChicago single-sign-on web page. Enter your CNetID and password. Select Log In.

    Note: You may be prompted to complete two-factor authentication. If prompted, follow the instructions on your screen. You may receive this message, "You have successfully signed out. For security reasons please close all browser tabs." This happens if you have already signed in to Microsoft 365. Refresh your screen.

    1. When prompted with the Stay signed in screen?, choose Yes or No based on your preference.
  3. Choose Outlook from the left navigation pane. Your email should appear.
  4. Select the gear icon at the upper-right of the screen.

  5. Now, the Settings menu will appear. From the Settings options, select View all Outlook settings located at the bottom of the list.

    An additional Settings screen will pop up displaying additional options.

  6. From the Settings options, choose Mail > Forwarding.


  7. Uncheck the checkbox next to Enable forwarding, and from the Forward my email to: field, delete the email address that you used to receive your forwarded email.
  8. Select the X in the top right corner to close the Settings options window. You are no longer forwarding your email, and it will be delivered to your University Microsoft 365 account.

Note to alumni: At this time, you cannot turn off @uchicago.edu forwarding once you have activated it. To disable email forwarding, send an email to alumnitechsupport@uchicago.edu.
