Create and Edit Panopto In-Video Quizzes (Instructors Only)

Panopto allows you to insert quizzes into your videos at specific timestamps. When a student plays the video, the quiz will appear at the specified time and prompt the student to complete it. In-video quizzes are automatically graded, and students will receive feedback as they complete the questions. In-video quizzing can help students stay actively engaged with the video, check their understanding at strategic time points, and retain their learning.

Note: We recommend taking in-video quizzes on desktops and laptops with reliable connections to the internet. The in-video quizzes should work with regular browsers in mobile devices, but not in the apps.

""

To edit the question text, click on the word Question, then enter your answer(s). For multiple-choice answers, type your answers in the blanks provided, then choose the radio button next to the answer that is correct. Click Add answer to add an additional answer. You can enter an explanation for the correct answer at the bottom.
""

Note on Special Characters

Panopto does not support rich text editing in its quizzes, but it does have Unicode support. This means that you can use special characters such as <, ≠, 2, ε, etc. In particular, note that superscripts and subscripts must be input as Unicode. (Alternatively, it is of course possible to use ^ and _ instead of actual superscripts and subscripts.)

Choose the Appropriate Question Type

Panopto supports four question types: multiple choice, multiple select, true/false, and fill-in-the-blank. In a multiple-choice question, there is exactly one correct answer; in multiple select questions, there may be more than one correct answer; in a true/false question, you choose whether a statement is true or false; and in a fill-in-the-blank question, you specify one or more correct answers to fill in a blank in a sentence.

Indicate the Correct Answer Choice

Once you have selected a question type, set the correct answer(s) by using the radio buttons or checkboxes next to the options, or (in the case of fill-in-the-blank) by typing in the correct answer(s) for the blank, surrounded by underscores and separated by a vertical bar. Note that fill-in-the-blank answers are not case-sensitive.

Add More Than One Question

A Panopto quiz can consist of more than one question at the same time point in the video. You can also add multiple quizzes at different time points in the video, each with its own question or set of questions.

Add Another Question to the Same Quiz (at One Single Time Point)

Once you have created your first quiz question, you can add more questions to the same quiz. All these questions will appear for the student to answer at the same time point in the video.

  1. Enter your question and answers. When you are done, click Add a Question.
  2. Repeat this process for all additional questions you wish to add. When your quiz is complete, click Done.
    ""
  3. Select your quiz options, then click Finish.
    ""

Add Quizzes at Multiple Time Points

Once you have created a quiz, you can add another quiz at a different time point in the video.

  1. After clicking Finish on your first quiz, move your cursor in the bar at the bottom to the time point where you want to create the next quiz, and click to jump the time want the next quiz to be available.
  2. Click Add a Quiz and repeat the above steps for adding one or more quiz question(s).
  3. Click Finish when you are done. Repeat as needed.
  4. Once you have added all the quizzes you wish to the video, be sure to click Publish at the to save your changes and leave the editor.

Note that adding multiple distinct quizzes at the same time point is not recommended and may cause unexpected behavior.

Select the Appropriate Quiz Settings

Once you finish entering questions, click Done. Panopto will present several options at this point:

Additionally, from this screen, you can re-order or delete questions. Use the up/down arrows to reorder questions or click the x next to a question to delete it.

Hint: You may wish to take a screenshot of previous results before editing.
    ""

Add Your Video Quiz to Canvas

Embed a Video in a Page

Panopto videos with quizzes can be embedded in Canvas pages. To learn how to embed a Panopto video in a Canvas page, see Embed a Panopto Video or Audio File into a Content Area in Canvas above.

Add a Video as an Assignment

If you want students to watch a video and complete the in-video quizzes for a graded assignment so that the in-video quiz grades appear automatically in Canvas' Gradebook, you can use the Assignments tool in Canvas.

  1. Create a new assignment and choose External Tool as the submission type. It is best to select Load This Tool In A New Tab. To choose a Panopto video, click the Find button under Enter or find an External Tool URL.
  2. This will open a menu of the list of external tools. Click Panopto Video from the list.
Dialog Box with Panopto Video Indicated
  3. From here, you will be able to choose an existing Panopto video, upload a video from your computer, or record a new Panopto video.
  4. The default point value for an Assignment in Canvas is 0 points.  If you do not change this default, your students will see a score of 0 in the Canvas Gradebook after completing the quiz, regardless of how many questions they answered correctly.  It is thus best to assign a non-zero number of points (e.g., 1 point per quiz question) to the Assignment so that your students can accurately judge their performance by their Gradebook score.
  5. If you do not wish students' performance on in-video quizzes to count towards their course grade, you can create an Assignment Group containing all the in-video quizzes you will assign, and weight that Assignment Group at 0% of the course grade.

If you have made your video with in-video quizzes a Canvas assignment, students’ scores on the quiz will be automatically imported into the Gradebook. Note: It may take several hours for the grades to be imported.

You can always see detailed quiz results by going to your Panopto video and clicking on Settings, followed by Quiz Results.

Panopto allows you to see results by quiz section, as well as look at individual users’ responses and scores.
