The Panopto-Canvas integration allows instructors to collect and provide feedback to video submissions from students. This article contains some tips for instructors on collecting and reviewing student video submissions.
Allow Students to Post to Panopto
Assignments Folder
By default, your Panopto Course Folder includes a special Assignments subfolder for students to create videos and upload them within your course. This Assignments folder has specific access and viewing permissions that are designed for student assignment submissions.
An Assignments folder is automatically created when your course folder is created.
- Select the Panopto Video link in your course site menu to open the default Panopto folder for your course.
- You will see a gray box containing a folder whose full name (shown when you mouse over it) ends in [assignments].

- Students can upload videos to this folder using the Panopto icon in Canvas’ Rich Content Editor. By default, they cannot view other students’ videos in the folder.
Adjusting Assignments Folder Settings
Because the Assignments folder has specific access and viewing permissions that are designed for student assignment submissions, it is recommended that faculty and instructors do not alter the folder's name or settings.
However, if you wish, you can adjust several settings for the assignments folder.
- Open your course's assignments folder by selecting the "[assignments]" folder link, then select the gray gear Settings icon at the top right. Note that the Settings icon may be hidden beneath a column of three dots.
- In the popup window, select Settings on the navigation menu on the left.
- Select the checkbox for Allow viewers to see each other’s sessions to allow students to see each other’s media upload.
- Select the checkbox for Allow viewers to make notes public to allow students to opt to share notes they take on Panopto while watching the videos.
We recommend you enable making notes public so that you can use the notes function to share feedback with individual students.
- Select the checkbox for Notify viewers via email and Microsoft Teams (if connected) when new videos are ready to automatically notify users when Panopto has finished processing the videos they uploaded.
- Select the checkbox for Disable comments on all sessions in this folder to disable discussion or comment functions for a video on the Panopto platform.
- To allow course members to download the video, select the Authenticated users with access option from the dropdown menu. By default, downloading videos is not supported.
- Set availability date for the uploaded media (Session).
- By default, instructors can download the videos students have submitted to the course assignments folder one by one.
Collect and Review Student Assignments via Canvas
The advantage of requiring students to submit their video assignments via Panopto is that you can use Panopto’s annotation tools, Notes and Discussion, to provide feedback that are timestamped to a specific point in the video.
Discussion Forum
As long as your course has an assignments folder (see Allow Students to Post to Panopto above), students can upload and record videos using Panopto via Canvas’ Rich Text Editor when they respond in a discussion board.
There are three options to provide private feedback to students:
- Email a student directly.
- Make the discussion exercise a graded assignment and use Canvas’ SpeedGrader to provide feedback.
The advantage of using a graded discussion and Canvas’ SpeedGrader is that the feedback is recorded within Canvas for the students and you to review in the future. It also gives you an easy way to check which students have posted their response before the due date and how many times each of them has posted.
- Use Panopto’s notes tool in conjunction with Canvas’ SpeedGrader if you wish to provide very detailed feedback that is time-stamped to a specific point in the video.
To create a graded discussion:
- Go to the discussion forum and select Edit.

- Scroll down to Options and select the checkbox for Graded.

- Select the maroon Save button at the bottom of the page to save the settings.

Note: You can still use Graded Discussion even if you don’t want to assign points and have them counted towards the final grade. Just leave the Points Possible as zero when you set up the discussion board.
To email students feedback directly via Canvas:
- Go to the student’s post and select their name.

- A Student Info card will pop up on the right of the screen. Select the Envelope button and write your message.

To provide and record feedback via Canvas’ SpeedGrader:
- Go to the discussion board and select the dotted Options button. Choose SpeedGrader.

- You can see a list of posts a particular student made. You can [1] watch the video within SpeedGrader by selecting the Play button and [2] provide assignment comments in the “Assignment Comments” textbox. You can also [3] assign a grade and/or [4] use a rubric (if set up) to provide feedback to the student.

- Select [5 above] Submit to save your grades and feedback.
Note: Students will receive a notification when you submit a grade or, if you have set a manual posting policy for the discussion, when you release the grades. For more about using Canvas’ SpeedGrader, see the Canvas Instructor Guide for SpeedGrader.
To provide very detailed time-specific feedback via Panopto:
- Select the upward arrow at the bottom right corner of the video. This will take you to Panopto’s web interface.

- In the navigation menu on the left, choose Notes.

- In the dropdown menu, select Join a channel....

- Give the new channel a name in the text box. Note the channel name; you will need this to share with your student or for you to review comments later. Since students can only see their own video, you can use one channel for each assignment.
- Watch the video and type your comments in the Notes textbox. Press the Enter key on your keyboard to save the comment.

- Continue to watch the video and type your comments.
- You can edit or delete a comment by selecting the appropriate icon (pencil or trash can, respectively) under the column of three dots.

- When you are done providing feedback, you must let students know that their feedback is ready and provide them with the channel name to check their comments. There is no search function for channels, so they must know the exact channel name, and Panopto does not send a notification to users. You may want to record this information in Canvas’ SpeedGrader so that students receive notifications via Canvas and can check back in the future.
Text Submission Assignment
To enable students to submit their videos for an assignment, you will need to create an Online Submission with text where students can submit their videos via Panopto.
- Create an assignment in Canvas.
- Under Submission Type, choose Online, then select Text Entry.

- Select Save to save the changes.
This will provide students with a Rich Text Editor, which enables them to use Panopto to submit their media assignment.
You can provide feedback to student via Canvas’ SpeedGrader or, if you have very detailed, time-stamped feedback, via Panopto’s notes function. The process is the same as in the discussion board.
Prevent Submissions Past Deadline
The easiest way to manage student submissions' due dates is via the due date and availability dates in Canvas assignments. In Graded Discussions and any Assignments:
- Edit the item.
- Scroll down to Assign at the bottom of the page.
- Under Due, add the assignment due date. If only the due date is specified, students can submit assignments past the due date, but Canvas’ Gradebook will record the work as a late submission.
- If you do not wish to accept late assignments, enter an Until date and time. Students will not be able to access the assignment after the Until date.
Alternatively, you can control this by closing the folder to student submissions: select the Settings (gear) icon in the main folder to re-open the Settings dialog box, scroll down to Availability, and set a date and time under Sessions remain available until...
