There are two ways to record a video in Panopto: using the Panopto Recorder (a separate app that you must install on your machine) or Panopto Capture (which records directly from your browser).
Record with the Panopto Recorder
Launch the Panopto Recorder
- Select Panopto Video within your Canvas course navigation menu.
- Navigate to the Panopto folder in which you wish the video to reside.
- Select the Create button at the upper right to open a drop-down menu, then select Panopto for Windows (PCs) or Panopto for Mac (Macs).

- A dialog box will open, allowing you to open or download Panopto. You must have Panopto installed on your device before you can begin recording. If you do not have Panopto installed, select the Download Panopto button to install it.
- After installing Panopto, select the Open Panopto button to open it if it does not open automatically. This will launch the Panopto Recorder.

Choose Recording Options
Before you begin recording, there are a number of options you can choose from to control what will be captured in your video.
Quick Start Guide
- To shoot a basic "talking head" video, make sure that you select Integrated Webcam next to Video and your computer's microphone or an attached external microphone next to Audio.
- If you wish to include a PowerPoint presentation or capture your screen, select the appropriate option under Secondary Sources.

Advanced Options

- Folder: If you wish to record in a different folder than the one you originally selected, you can choose a folder from the drop-down menu.
- Name: The video's default name is the date and time of recording. You can change it by clicking and typing in the box provided.
- Video: Select the Integrated Webcam option from the adjacent drop-down menu if you wish to record yourself using your computer's webcam. While the option is selected, the view from your webcam will appear in the window immediately above. If you do not wish to record yourself, select None.
- Audio: Use this option to choose the audio source for your video (e.g. your computer's built-in microphone or an external microphone). If you want your video to be silent, choose None.
- Quality: You can choose from Standard, High, or Ultra. The higher the quality you choose, the larger the resulting video file will be.
- Capture Computer Audio: Select this box if you want whatever audio your computer is presently playing to be captured and included in the video recording. Otherwise, leave it unchecked.
- Secondary Sources
- Capture PowerPoint: Enabling this option allows you to capture a PowerPoint presentation and include it in your video. Once you have enabled this option, you will be prompted to open your PowerPoint presentation, if it is not already open. You will then be asked whether you want Panopto to begin recording immediately or wait.
- Capture Main Screen: Enabling this option allows you to capture whatever is currently displayed on your device's screen and include it in your video. If you enable this option, it is recommended that you check the Enable screen capture preview box that will appear, so you can see what the screen capture will look like in your video before you begin recording.
- Capture Secondary Screen: Enabling this option allows you to capture a secondary screen that is connected to your device and include it in your video. Again, it is recommended that you check the "Enable screen capture preview box" to see what the screen capture will look like in the video.
- Add Another Video Source: Click this button to add an additional video stream to your video. When you click it, a drop-down menu will appear allowing you to choose from available video inputs.
- Resolution: Use this option to choose the resolution, frame rate, and/or bit rate of your video. When you have made your changes, click the blue Apply button that will appear to apply them to your recording.
Record Your Video
- When you are ready to begin recording, select the Record button at the top left.

- A timer will tell you how much time has elapsed in the recording. To pause the recording temporarily, click Pause, then select it again to resume. When you are ready to end the recording, select Stop.

- A dialog box will appear notifying you that the recording is complete. You can now rename the video if you wish, or you can also enter a description for the video. When you are done, select the blue Upload button.

- The screen that appears will show you that your video is processing. Once it is fully processed (100%), the Edit and View links will be enabled for your use.

- To find or edit your video later, please see Panopto: Manage Panopto Media Content and Add It to Canvas

Re-Process Your Video to Correct Errors
If you encounter errors in your video, such as audio lag or image distortion after processing is complete, you can re-process the video. This may correct the errors. Please note that you should only re-process the video if you have not yet made changes to your video, such as making edits or adding closed captioning. These changes will be undone by re-processing.
- Mouse over your video to make a menu appear and choose Settings.
- In the left-hand menu, select the Manage tab.
- Scroll down and select the Re-process link to re-process your video.
