Panopto Documentation for Non-Canvas Users


You can record, upload, edit, and share videos directly through Panopto without logging in to Canvas. In order to record videos directly in Panopto, you need to either download and install the Panopto app or use Panopto Capture in your web browser.

Note: While you can create in-video quizzes in Panopto without logging into Canvas, you will not be able to record the quiz results in the Canvas Gradebook.

Log in to Panopto

  1. Navigate to uchicago.hosted.panopto.com.
  2. Make sure that UChicago Okta Login is selected in the top drop-down menu, then select Sign in.
  3. Log in using your CNetID and password.
  4. Complete 2FA if prompted.
  5. The home page of Panopto opens.


Upload a Video to Panopto

  1. Navigate to UChicago Panopto and sign in using UChicago SSO (see Log into Panopto).
  2. Navigate to the folder in which you wish to upload your video. You can create a new subfolder within the current folder by selecting the Add folder link.
  3. When you are in the correct folder, select Create in the upper left hand corner and choose Upload media from the drop-down menu that appears.
  4. You can either drag-and-drop a video from your computer into the dialog box that appears or select the indicated space to browse for a file on your computer.
  5. You will be notified that your video has been uploaded and is being processed. When it finishes processing, you can view or edit it.

Record a Video Using the Panopto App

  1. Navigate to UChicago Panopto and sign in using UChicago SSO (see Log into Panopto).
  2. Navigate to the folder in which you wish to upload your video. You can create a new subfolder within the current folder by selecting the Add folder link.
  3. When you are in the correct folder, select Create and choose Record in application from the drop-down menu that appears.
  4. If you have the Panopto app installed, you can launch it now. Otherwise, you will be prompted to download and install it.
  5. When the Panopto app launches, a dialog box will open and activate your webcam. Select Capture Main Screen to capture your screen; Capture Second Screen to capture a second screen (if applicable); Capture PowerPoint to capture a PowerPoint presentation; and/or Capture Computer Audio to record your computer's audio.
  6. When you are ready to begin, select the Record button. When you are finished, select it again to stop recording. For more details, see How to Record with Panopto for Windows or How to Record with Panopto for Mac.
  7. In the dialog box, enter a name for your video (the default name is the date and time of recording). You can also enter a description if you wish; descriptions are searchable, so you can enter keywords that will make it easy for you to find the video later. Select Done when you are done to add the video to your chosen Panopto folder.

Edit Your Panopto Video

  1. Navigate to uchicago.hosted.panopto.com and sign in using UChicago SSO (see Log into Panopto).
  2. Navigate to the folder in which your video is contained.
  3. Mouse over your video to make a menu appear and select Edit.
  4. The editing screen will appear, with a menu of options on the left, including closed captioning, adding quizzes, and making cuts.

Delete Your Panopto Video

  1. Navigate to the folder in which your video is contained.
  2. Select the three dots over the video to make a menu appear and select Delete.
  3. When prompted, select Yes.

Share Your Panopto Video

Set Video Permissions

  1. Navigate to the folder in which your video is contained.
  2. Mouse over your video to make a menu appear and select Share.
  3. You can use the drop-down menu underneath "Who has access:" to adjust permissions on your video. There are several options:
    1. Specific people: Only specific users and groups can view your video. You can invite additional people to view your video by entering their email address(es) in the "Invite people:" box below.
    2. Anyone at your organization with the link: Allows anyone in the UChicago organization to view the video if they have a direct link (see "Link to Your Panopto Video from an External Site," below).
    3. Anyone at your organization: Anyone in the UChicago organization can find and view the video.
    4. Anyone with the link: Anyone who has a direct link to the video can view it (see the Link to Your Panopto Video from an External Site below).
    5. Public on the web: Anyone on the internet can find and view your video.
  4. Changes will save automatically.

Link to Your Panopto Video from an External Site

To get a link to your Panopto video that you can insert in an email or external website, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the folder in which your video is contained.
  2. Mouse over your video to make a menu appear and select Share.
  3. In the page that appears, select Copy Link Ensure the Anyone can find and access option for sharing is selected.
  4. Paste the link into your email or internet browser.

Embed Your Panopto Video in an External Site

You can embed a Panopto video into an external website. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the folder in which your video is contained.
  2. Mouse over your video to make a menu appear and select Share.
  3. In the page that appears, select the Embed tab. Then select Copy Embed Code.
  4. Paste the embed code into the HTML of your webpage to embed the video.

Live Stream Video in Panopto

Panopto makes it easy to create a live webcast. You can make your webcast publicly available on the web or share it only with specific people. To create your webcast, follow these steps:

  1. Log into Panopto with UChicago Okta.
  2. Navigate to the folder in which you wish your webcast to be recorded.
  3. Select Create, then select Webcast from the drop-down menu.
  4. In the page that appears, give your webcast a name and (if you wish) a description. You can also make your webcast available to anyone on the web by checking the box provided. When you are ready to set up your webcast, select Create.
  5. Your webcast will now be set up. The page that appears allows you to edit various settings, including whether user comments are enabled. (Note: Comments are enabled by default.) When all settings are to your liking and you are ready to begin recording, click Record.

  6. You will be prompted to open the Panopto app. Select OK. (If you do not have the Panopto app installed, you will need to download and install it at this time.)
  7. Set up your recording options and select Record to start recording.
  8. After you've completed your recording by selecting Stop, the webcast will begin uploading automatically to your designated folder.
