The Panopto Video Viewer allows you to view Panopto videos. The following guide indicates the various functions of the Video Viewer and where they can be found on your screen. In particular, if the video contains closed captions, you can toggle them on or off, and if there are multiple streams included in the video, you can select which one is displayed in the Player’s secondary video window.
To play a video within Panopto, follow these steps.
Review Panopto Documentation for Non-Canvas Users for information on how to log in to UChicago Panopto.
For the various functions available to you in the Panopto Video Viewer, please see Learn About the Features of the Video Viewer.
Note: If you are viewing the video within a Canvas page or other content item, you will use the Embedded Video Viewer instead. For more information, please see Learn About the Features of the Embedded Video Viewer.
If your video includes audible dialogue, Panopto will give you the option to generate automatic captions using the Captions option in the left menu ---> Import Automatic Captions. You can then edit these captions manually for accuracy. See the section "Caption a Panopto Video" in the article Use Advanced Panopto Functions for more information.
Once captions have been added to a video, the closed caption icon (CC) will appear in the player. If you toggle this icon, it will turn maroon, and your closed captions will appear in the secondary video window.
Panopto allows you to combine video from multiple sources: your webcam, your computer’s screen, a secondary screen, a slide presentation, etc. For any video that includes two or more sources, the stream picker will appear in the Panopto Player, and you can use the picker to choose which video source is played in the secondary video window. Whichever source is selected will be highlighted in maroon.
If your Panopto video includes a slide presentation, thumbnails of the slides will appear by default beneath the player controls. Select Slides to display the slide presentation in the secondary video window.
If your video includes a screen capture of one or more screens, the stream picker will include a separate icon for each screen. The icon for the main screen will appear at the left, followed by any secondary screens. Click the appropriate icon to display the corresponding screen capture in the secondary video window.
