Use the Hypothes.is Chrome Plug-in

The Hypothes.is plug-in for Chrome enables users to annotate web pages directly from the browser. This enables users to annotate outside of the context of class activities and assignments in the Canvas Learning Management System. Instead, users can toggle the plug-in on and off within Chrome as desired, creating highlights, annotations, and Page Notes in private mode; public mode; or as part of a reading group, and return to those notes later through their user account.

To install and activate the plug-in for use follow the steps below.

Create a Hypothes.is user account

  1. Navigate to the Hypothes.is website (https://web.hypothes.is/) to create a free account. You may use any email account (e.g., UChicago, other professional, or personal address) you wish when signing up.
  2. After creating a Hypothes.is account, you can view a summary of your annotation activities by returning to your account on any browser.

  3. You can click on any annotations displayed in this summary to view the specific annotations, highlights, and notes you've created on particular websites, and additionally return to these websites by clicking Visit annotations in context.

Note: If you create a Hypothes.is account using your UChicago email, any annotations you make using this credential will remain separate from your Hypothes.is activity in Canvas. In other words, annotations made using the Hypothes.is-Canvas integration are completely separate from annotations made using a personal Hypothes.is account in the Chrome browser, even if the you use your UChicago email address when setting up the latter.

Share pages annotated with the Hypothes.is Chrome plug-in

To share an annotated website, you only need to share the website location address (URL) with another user who has installed the Hypothes.is Chrome plug-in and has a personal Hypothes.is account. When that user loads the page and enables the Hypothes.is plug-in, they will encounter the annotation applet, with all public annotations, notes, and comments visible. In other words, your public annotations are visible by anyone who has the Hypothes.is plug-in enabled and you've shared your annotations' URL.
