This article discusses how to reuse Panopto videos from one course to another.

Reuse Panopto videos in Canvas

There are two ways to reuse Panopto videos across multiple Canvas courses. You can copy the videos from your old course to your new course, or you can reuse them through Modules.

Option 1: Course Copy

With the Course Copy option in Panopto, you can copy Panopto videos from your old course folder to your new course folder.

  1. Copy your Canvas course. If you need help, read How do I copy content from another Canvas course using the Course Import tool?
  2. Go to your destination course then select Panopto Video in the Canvas course navigation menu.
  3. Select the gear icon to open Settings.

  7. You will be prompted to confirm your choice of the course folder to be copied into your new course. Click OK to confirm. Note: Only one course folder can be copied over.
  8. Your video copy should be completed within 24 hours.

Option 2: Modules

Another way to use Panopto videos over multiple quarters/courses is to put a link in Modules to each video.

To do this,

  1. Select the + button to add an item to the module.

  4. On the Link Resource from External Tool screen and from the drop-down menu, select the folder where your video is located. Select Insert, then select Add Item to add the link to the module.

  5. Select the Publish icon to manually publish the video and make it visible to your students. The link will not be published automatically.

    Tip:
When you copy the course into a future course site, the links should continue to work; but sometimes, Panopto videos do not copy over. If a video does not copy over, you can manually add it to a Panopto module using the External Tool option. This will ensure that the video permissions make the video available to students in your current course, even though the video continues to reside in the old course folder.

Use a Departmental Folder

If you will be using Panopto videos in multiple courses and/or reusing them from quarter to quarter, you may wish to house them in a departmental folder. For more information, please see: Request a Panopto Departmental Folder

Panopto Copy

If you need to collect Panopto viewer data for grading purposes, it is recommended that you create new copies of your videos. You can use Panopto Copy to create a new version of your videos for your current students. This is also a great solution to keep interaction data (e.g., comments) separate if you teach multiple sections of a course.
