Canvas has integrated Microsoft Immersive Reader to enhance reading experiences for language learners, people with some visual disabilities, and readers with dyslexia and other processing differences. This will help improve accessibility for all and can be leveraged by everyone to increase reading comprehension. You can use the Microsoft Immersive Reader when viewing the course home page, syllabus page, individual assignment pages, or general Canvas web pages.
When you are viewing the course home page, syllabus page, individual assignment pages, or general Canvas web pages, click the Immersive Reader button.
The Microsoft Immersive Reader displays a variety of tools and options to enhance your reading experience. You can manage text, grammar, and reading preferences using the toolbar in the top right.
Grammar tools help improve reading comprehension by splitting words into syllables and highlighting nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The Syl·la·bles tool divides words by showing small dots between syllables. Under Parts of Speech, turn on Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, or Adverbs to highlight every noun, verb, adjective, or adverb on the page in a color that corresponds to the color of the label. Customize highlight colors and show labels inline by turning on Show labels.
To expand the reader display, select the Full Screen icon that looks like an arrow.
To hear the page text read aloud, select the Play button.
To adjust audio settings, select the Voice Settings button.
To close the reader and return to Canvas, select the Back arrow.
Immersive Reader has a built-in auto-translation tool. This allows you to change the language of the text you are reading. Select the language from the list and then you can translate word by word or choose to translate the entire document.
