The University of Chicago provides CrowdStrike Falcon software to protect UChicago-owned and personal computers, including laptops, desktops, and servers, from viruses, malware, and other malicious activity. CrowdStrike has replaced the University’s Symantec Endpoint Protection offering.

CrowdStrike is a modern endpoint protection platform. The lightweight agent can run on Windows, Mac, or Linux and uses minimal system resources. CrowdStrike works best when a computer is connected to the internet and requires an internet connection to install. It also updates automatically without requiring a reboot.

There are two versions available: one for professionally-managed devices (which is available via unit IT groups) and one for personal devices.

For more information, visit University of Chicago CrowdStrike.

CrowdStrike for University Devices

University devices should run CrowdStrike Falcon Enterprise, which provides the highest level of security, and the ability for IT professionals to manage the software and security alerts. If your device receives support from a campus IT team, please contact that team to request the installation of CrowdStrike Falcon. Unit IT administrators who are not already equipped to manage CrowdStrike should contact the IT Services Information Security team to request onboarding at security@uchicago.edu.

CrowdStrike for Personal Use

The University offers a personal use version of CrowdStrike Falcon that provides essential next-generation antivirus protection, but lacks some security and support features available in the enterprise edition, including active monitoring of alerts by IT professionals. This version is intended for use on personally-owned computers and is only available for faculty, staff, and student users affiliated with the University of Chicago. Examples of intended use include student laptops and faculty/staff personal devices at home. Individuals who graduate or are no longer affiliated with the University must uninstall this version. Installation instructions are found at CrowdStrike for Personal Use.
