Phishing is the act of masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication like emails, web pages, or SMS messages in order to obtain personal information, such as usernames, passwords, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and credit card numbers from victims. Some recent phishing attempts have taken the form of urgent requests to make purchases.
