Jabber Softphone Overview

IT Services provides Jabber as a solution for when you want to use a computer, laptop, or smartphone to receive and make calls via the internet while using your desk phone number. Jabber allows you to experience the same high-performance connectivity that your work desk phone provides including the use of caller ID and voicemail. Calls made to your desk phone number will be routed to any device where Jabber is installed and running. Additionally, when you make calls, your call will appear to the recipient as a call from your desk phone number.

Note: Jabber does not require a physical desk phone, but it does require an active University phone line service. Also, not all features will be enabled within Jabber.

Eligibility

Jabber is available for use by faculty and staff at the University, University of Chicago Medicine, and the Biological Sciences Division (BSD). When installed on a managed device, Jabber is supported by IT Services or a local IT support group.

Pricing

At this time, Jabber is offered at no charge, but you are subject to other IT costs depending upon your department's current IT allocation pricing. For more details, see the IT Allocation Pricing and Non-IT Allocation Pricing sections below.

IT Allocation Pricing

If your current phone service is covered under the University's IT Allocation budget model, there are no additional costs to use Jabber.

Non-IT Allocation Pricing

If you are part of UChicago Medicine or the BSD, your pricing is not part of the University's IT Allocation pricing. Jabber will not add any additional costs to your current phone service rates. However, if you want to use "Jabber only" (i.e., no physical desk phone), you will incur the same cost of having basic phone services per your department's phone rates.
