This guide covers usage of 1Password business licenses for users supported by UChicago IT Services and Divisional IT. Support for personal/family licenses is provided directly by 1Password.
Note: We have a pre-recorded 1Password team member training available. Please find it on Box.
One-time Setup
- To begin, accept your 1Password invite link via email and enroll your first trusted device. For a walkthrough, see this step-by-step demonstration video.
- Your 1Password software may be installed by your IT support. If not, you can obtain the software from the 1Password downloads page. For mobile devices you can obtain from the vendor app store. Do not use an app store for the desktop application, as it may be a previous version of 1Password.
- Move your data from other applications to 1Password.
- Turn off the built-in password manager in your browser.
- Recommended: claim your free personal/family license to use in conjunction with your business account. Keep your personal passwords in your personal/family account so you can retain access if you leave the university and lose access to your business account.
Using 1Password
Sign in and add devices
- Sign in to https://uchicago.1password.com using your University account (for a personal account use https://my.1password.com).
- You must self-authorize devices before you can use them with 1Password, which means you authorize devices with those you are already using. If you do not have any authorized devices (e.g. you were only using it via browser and your browser cookies get deleted), you will be locked out of 1Password and need to request account recovery from your IT support. View this video demonstration on how to add devices.
- See below for additional options on convenient ways to unlock 1Password.
Use your Vaults
- All users have an individual "Employee" Vault where you store work-related items that aren’t shared with your team. Do not share personal non-work items in your Employee Vault. Claim your free personal license instead!
- Some users will have additional Vaults to use for sharing items with colleagues - these vaults are shared among teammates.
- If you have a personal 1Password account and sign in on the same device, you will see your Family vault. 1Password helps you seamlessly use multiple accounts. Please note that your Family account is managed by you, and allows you to retain access if you separate from the University. If you leave the university you will not retain access to your business account or its contents.

Share items with others
- If you have an ongoing need to share items with colleagues, request a new shared vault from your local IT Support.
- You can securely share individual items via a link. Item sharing works within the University and with some external institutions. If you need to share an item but receive an error message that it is not allowed, you can request the external domain be allowed. View how to securely share 1Password items.
