Access and Getting Started

Why is there no Claude option on my SailPoint or Launchpad?

The most common reason is that your employment or enrollment status makes you ineligible for automatic provisioning. The following groups are not automatically eligible:

Sign in to SailPoint and check whether the Request Access to Claude AI tile appears. If it does not appear, your account type may not yet be eligible. For more information, review the Claude Enterprise Eligibility article. You can submit an exception request through the Claude Enterprise Support Request form if you have a legitimate business need.

I am eligible but still do not see the option on Launchpad. What should I try?

This may be because your browser does not recognize that you have been granted access.

  1. Navigate to Sailpoint.
  2. Click the profile icon in the top right corner, and select Sign Out.
  3. Sign back in with your CNetID and password. Complete 2FA if prompted.
  4. Clear your browser's cookies and cache, then try again.

Provisioning can take up to two hours to propagate after a request is approved. For more information, review the Claude Enterprise Eligibility article. If none of the solutions above work, submit a Claude Enterprise Support Request ticket.

I requested access in SailPoint but still cannot get into Claude. What is wrong?

After requesting access in SailPoint, you still need to complete setup at claude.ai using your UChicago SSO credentials, 1-2 hours after a successful Sailpoint request is completed.

  1. Navigate to claude.ai.
  2. Sign in with your UChicago email and SSO credentials. Do not use a personal email or password.
  3. Accept the terms of service when prompted. Skipping this step prevents you from signing in.

Additionally, you may need to use another browser or an incognito/private tab to sign in. If you completed those steps and still cannot get in, submit a Claude Enterprise Support Request ticket.

I did not accept the terms during signup and now I cannot sign in. How do I fix this?

Clear your browser's cookies and cache, then try signing in again. Most users are able to accept the terms after doing this. If the issue continues, submit a Claude Enterprise Support Request ticket for help resetting your account state.

I submitted the form without switching the required button from "No" to "Yes." Now the form is locked and I cannot make changes. Can it be reset?

Open a different browser or clear your current browser's cache and cookies and start a completely new browser session. Either option will load a fresh version of the form, allowing you to complete the acknowledgment field correctly before submitting.  If you completed those steps and still cannot get in, submit a Claude Enterprise Support Request ticket.

Eligibility and Exceptions

I am not eligible. Can I still get access?

You can submit an exception request through the Claude Enterprise Support Request form. Not all exceptions are approved. If a third party, such as an NGO or research partner, requires you to use Claude for their work, they are expected to provide their own Claude account. UChicago's enterprise license does not cover external obligations.

I am a student. How do I claim access?

If you are reflected as active in the Academic Information System (AIS) for the current quarter, then you are eligible to access Claude Enterprise. If you are not reflected as active, for any reason, then you will not be able to use Claude Enterprise. For more information about how to setup your Claude Enterprise account, please review Student Access to Claude Enterprise.

I am a student, but I took a leave of absence for the current quarter. Am I eligible?

No, you are not eligible. Students who took a leave of absence, graduated, or withdrew from the university are not eligible to claim access to Claude Enterprise. However, if you claimed access prior to taking a leave of absence, graduating, or withdrawing, then your account should be active for up to 45 days. After that period, access will only be reinstated when you are marked as active in the AIS for another quarter.

As a student, how can I upgrade to a Premium License?

Students are unable to upgrade to a premium license on their own. If you are also a University staff member, then your manager with purchasing approval must submit the Claude Enterprise Premium License Request form on your behalf.

I will be teaching/a TA in an upcoming course. Can I be granted access to Claude now?

Your job appointment must be in Workday before we can grant access to Claude Enterprise. Once that condition is met, your supervisor should submit the Claude Enterprise Support Request form on your behalf. However, if you are a student, you are automatically granted access to Claude. Please review Student Access to Claude Enterprise for instructions on accessing the platform.

Personal Accounts and Migration

I already have a personal Claude account using my @uchicago.edu email. What happens now?

Your personal account and your UChicago Enterprise account are separate. No automatic linking or merging occurs. You can continue using your personal account independently.

Can I merge my personal Claude account with the UChicago Enterprise account?

You cannot merge accounts. However, you can migrate your personal account data into the Enterprise account. For step-by-step migration instructions, review Move your existing AI account content into UChicago Claude Enterprise.

When I sign in through the UChicago portal, it opens my personal Claude account. How do I fix this?

This usually happens when you have an active session under your personal account in the same browser. Try these steps:

  1. Navigate to claude.ai
  2. In the bottom left corner, select on your name.
  3. Select Logout.
  4. Clear cookies and cache in your browser.
  5. Sign back in via the UChicago SSO portal. Do not sign in directly at claude.ai.

The enterprise and personal accounts are not linked. You need to make sure you authenticate through the UChicago SSO path.

I have a paid personal Claude subscription under my @uchicago.edu email. Can I cancel it?

Yes. To cancel your personal subscription, go to your account settings on claude.ai under your personal login and cancel from there. UChicago's enterprise license covers your use at no personal cost. Direct billing questions for your personal account to Anthropic directly, as IT Services cannot manage personal subscription billing.

With my BSD/Booth email address, how can I connect Claude to read my mailbox?

The Biological Sciences Division and Booth School of Business handle their mail systems independent of IT Services. Connecting Claude to your email may require configuration changes and ITS has no jurisdiction over BSD/Booth to make these changes. Please contact BSDIS at bsdis@bsd.uchicago.edu or Booth Help Desk at helpdesk@chicagobooth.edu.

Premium Accounts

What is a premium account?

A Premium license provides substantially higher usage limits—2.5 times the capacity of the Claude Max 5x license. It also includes access to the Fable 5 model, which is not available in the Standard license.

Is there an equivalent to the Claude Max 20x I can use?

No. There is no equivalent to the Claude Max 20x license under the University Agreement.

I hit my Premium license limit too quickly. What options do I have to increase my usage limit?

Wait for the reset (limits reset automatically within five hours). Alternatively, departments can request a dedicated cloud Amazon pay-as-you-go account through the GenAI Tool Request form and the Cloud Services forms.

I'm a student, can I buy my own premium account?

No. Students aren't eligible to purchase premium. Eligible students receive free standard Claude Enterprise access.

Exception: Student employees whose managers request it on their behalf may request premium ($600/year) if their work regularly needs it and the justification is approved.

Data and Compliance

Is Claude approved for use with FERPA-protected student data?

Yes. Claude Enterprise at UChicago has been approved for use with FERPA-compliant data. For detailed guidance on what is and is not permitted, refer to the IT knowledge base or submit a Claude Enterprise Support Request ticket.

What happens to my data after I no longer have UChicago access (for example, because I've graduated)?

After you lose UChicago access, your data will be kept for up to 45 days. After that period, the data will be deleted purged and unrecoverable?

Can I migrate my data to my personal account?

Yes, although there is no automatic feature to migrate the data. To start,

  1. Sign in to claude.ai with the email address you associated with your Claude Enterprise account.
  2. Click your name or initials in the lower-left corner, then Settings.
  3. Go to Privacy.
  4. Click Export data.
  5. Watch your email for a download link (it usually arrives within a few hours).
  6. Download the ZIP file promptly — the link expires after about 24 hours.

This data can be uploaded to your personal account. For more information about account migration, review the Move your existing AI account content into UChicago Claude Enterprise article. Although the article describes moving data from a personal account into an Enterprise account, the steps are the same going the opposite way.

HIPAA and PHI Environments

I work with patient health information. Can I use Claude Enterprise?

Yes, but you must use the HIPAA-compliant environment instead of the standard Enterprise environment. These are two separate environments, and you can only access a single environment when claiming your Claude account. For more information, review UChicago Claude Enterprise: Full vs. HIPAA Version.

How do I switch to the HIPAA environment?

Switching environments requires a manual update to your Okta access group by IT. Contact IT Services and request to be moved to the HIPAA or PHI Claude environment. This switch can only be approved once and it cannot be self-served at this time.

Can I have accounts in both environments?

No, users are only able to access one Claude Enterprise account and they must select the respective environment based on their primary use case.

Using Claude

How do I check my usage?

In claude.ai or in the desktop application:

  1. Click on your name in the bottom left corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Usage.

Usage limits are reset every five hours. For more information, review the UChicago Claude Enterprise: Licenses, Features, and Usage Limits article.

How can I keep my Claude projects organized?

Ensure that Claude Projects are given specific titles so that they are easy to distinguish the purpose of. Additionally, on the desktop application you can create new folders in your system directory and confine projects to specific folders so that there is no overlap. While working in a project, using new threads for distinct tasks helps to organize the work, since long multifaceted threads can be complicated to parse through.

How do Claude Artifacts work and can I share them?

Claude Artifacts are drafted documents, code, or scripts that appear in a side panel instead of inline in the chat. These can be edited directly without cluttering up the chat thread. They can be easily shared as there is an option to generate a sharing link although this link cannot be shared with non-UChicago users.

  1. With the artifact open, click the down arrow next to the Copy button in the header.
  2. Select Share artifact.
  3. Select Share & copy link.
  4. The link has been copied to your clipboard. It can now be shared as needed.

I want to use Claude in Chrome, why is it not working?

The Claude in Chrome connector is not available for UChicago Claude Enterprise accounts. This connector gives Claude the ability to assume complete control of your entire browser and can run malicious attacks in the background, hijacking your machine as well as your data.

Technical Issues

Claude.ai is blocked in my browser, especially on BSD-managed devices using Microsoft Edge. What do I do?

Some users on machines provided by BSD have encountered Claude being blocked by BSD device level policies. If the block continues, contact BSDIS at bsdis@bsd.uchicago.edu.

I am getting a 403 error when using Claude Code. What is wrong?

403 errors in Claude Code are typically an authentication or permissions issue. Try the following steps:

  1. Re-authenticate by running the sign-in command in Claude Code.
    1. For more information, review the Claude Code Authentication documentation.
  2. Navigate to Sailpoint.
  3. Verify your enterprise access is still active.

Submit a Claude Enterprise Support Request ticket if the issue continues. Provide the exact error message and the command you ran.

The web_fetch tool returns an error for any site that I attempt to access. What is wrong?

We are currently aware that there is an error with the web_fetch tool for Claude Chat and Cowork. Although we are presently working toward a fix, there is no solution at the time. This tool is operational in Claude Code if you can execute your tasks there. Otherwise, we will give an update when we have fixed this issue.

Claude Science

Why can't I access Claude Science with my UChicago login?

Claude Science is currently a pre-release beta and is not enabled in the UChicago enterprise environment. UChicago's policy is to wait until a feature reaches general availability before enabling it for enterprise users. This ensures that the required security and privacy protections are in place. The sign-in block you see is expected behavior, not an account error. For more information, review the UChicago Claude Enterprise: Licenses, Features, and Usage Limits article.

When will Claude Science be available?

There is no confirmed timeline. When Claude Science reaches general availability and meets UChicago's security and privacy requirements, IT Services will evaluate it for enterprise enablement. To receive updates when new features like Claude Science become available, browse the Claude Intranet page and sign up for the "With, Without, and About" newsletter.

API Access

Can I get an API token to connect Claude to my own tools or scripts?

API token access through the UChicago Enterprise license is not available at this time. If you have a programmatic or integration use case, submit a Cloud Services Support Request form for review. The Cloud account is a pay-as-you-go model and is not covered by the Enterprise agreement.

I want to connect Claude to an external application that requires API access. How do I request that?

Submit a connector request through the Cloud Services Support Request form. Connectors are reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis. Once approved, IT Services facilitates enabling the connector. This is not something users can configure themselves. The Cloud account is a pay-as-you-go model and is not covered by the Enterprise agreement.

Access from Abroad

I am in China and cannot access Claude even with a VPN. Is this an account issue?

This is not an account issue, China restricts access to both Claude and UChicago's cVPN. Claude is inaccessible from mainland China regardless of account status or VPN use. There is no workaround available through IT Services.

I am in France and want to access Claude. Is this possible?

Claude Enterprise is available for use by faculty and staff in France. For students, please contact the Registrar to see if you are marked active in the Academic Information System (AIS). If so, you will automatically have access to a Claude Enterprise account. Otherwise, you may need to submit a Claude Enterprise Support Request ticket.
