Register Authsmtp Exemptions

This article explains how to register an IP address associated with a mail server for an exemption to the requirement to use authenticated simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP).

In most cases, mail clients should be configured to use our authenticated SMTP relay, authsmtp.uchicago.edu, for outbound mail. Some application servers are unable to use authenticated SMTP.

To register for an authenticated SMTP exemption, please email your request to unix@uchicago.edu and include the following:

  1. Contact information
  2. IP addresses of devices in question
  3. Brief description of the device or application

You should hear back within one or two business days whether your exemption has been approved. Once your exemption is approved, then you may configure your application to use smtp.uchicago.edu as an outbound SMTP relay.

Things to note:

  1. This process only registers with respect to SMTP. If you have an application or departmental mail server that you would like to have to "allow" listed in the central anti-spam service, contact IT Services with details about the service you want to allow.
  2. IT Services may preemptively revoke or refuse an exemption if there are signs of abuse or illicit email activity on a given host.
