The University of Chicago uses Google Custom Search Engine (CSE) as the search tool at www.uchicago.edu. See Google Custom Search Engine (CSE) Overview for background on the CSE.
It's important to note that your site must be indexed by Google to appear as results at www.uchicago.edu or in the CSE embedded in your site. In most cases, University sites will be indexed unless they are explicitly excluded or are secured via authentication or special network access rules.
To ensure your content appears in CSE results, follow these guidelines:
- Create a new property in Google Search Console (https://search.google.com/search-console/welcome). Here you can submit your site for verification. This requires that you add something to your site, (e.g., a file or a meta tag) that Google can check. Once your site is verified, you can submit a sitemap, request a recrawl, and receive reports about your site in Google search results.
- Keep your site open to the public and hosted at one of the domains that are included in the University's CSE. For example, uchicago.edu, chicagobooth.edu, uchospitals.edu, and uchicagokidshospital.edu are all included. A full list of domains is in Google Custom Search Engine (CSE) Overview.
- Make sure an indexed page links to your site. Google’s crawler can only find content by following links.
- Do not include a robots.txt file or meta tags that prevent Google’s crawler from indexing your page. See http://www.robotstxt.org/.
- Optimize your site for search engines. Read High Accessibility Is Effective Search Engine Optimization for more information.
- Contact Web Services at search@lists.uchicago.edu with any questions about coding best practices.
