Claim Your CNetID

Your CNetID is the key to accessing most services, systems, and applications while you are a student at UChicago. Create your CNetID, and refer to the Claim Your CNetID knowledge article for instructions if needed.

Setup Two-factor Authentication (2FA)

Two-factor authentication is one of the best tools to secure your sensitive information from hackers and data breaches. UChicago uses two-factor authentication (2FA) as a layer of protection on most of the systems, services, and apps provided to you as a student. You will need to set up 2FA before setting up MyAccount, Microsoft 365 suite (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, etc.), and the UChicago Virtual Private Network (cVPN). Learn more about 2FA and how to set it up. You can also view these 2FA-related articles for specific instructions on topics that cover what you should do when you lose or break a device that uses 2FA or use a YubiKey for 2FA authentication, and more.

Review and Update MyAccount

Manage all your UChicago account services from MyAccount including options to secure your account information, setup email aliases, and email forwarding. Read MyAccount Overview for instructions.

Manage Your Email Options

When you claim your CNetID, an email address is created simultaneously, which looks like cnetid@uchicago.edu. See Email Overview at UChicago for more details.

Email Forwarding - Read the Forward Your UChicago Email knowledge article for instructions. Tip: To confirm your email forward is working, send a test email to your UChicago email account, then visit your selected forwarding destination to confirm the change was successful. You should see the test email in your inbox. Note: If you have set your forwarding to UChicago Gmail, you must use a different email account (not the Gmail account to which you set your email to forward) to test the forwarding.

Email Aliases - Read Modify Your Default Email Address in Outlook to learn how to set up your email aliases.

Email Options: Microsoft Outlook and UChicago GMail

Microsoft Outlook on the web is the University's email application of choice for receiving University-business-related emails. You can access your email at portal.office.com. You also have the option to forward your Outlook email account to your UChicago Google email account which is accessible at gmail.uchicago.edu. Read Connect Your Gmail Account to Outlook and Microsoft 365. However, be aware that your department may have email restrictions on forwarding, so check before setting up forwarding. To manage your email filters, visit spam.uchicago.edu, then log in with your CNetID and password. For more information, view the Email Protection Overview and FAQ.

Alert: Do not forward your UChicago email to your personal Gmail account. To use your account, you must agree to abide by the University's Acceptable Use Policy, which states that protected data and emails (including sensitive student, financial, and research data) should not be forwarded or stored outside the campus network. If you have questions about the policy, read FAQs On The Acceptable Use Policy. You should also read the Microsoft Campus Agreement FAQ: Get Applications for Personal Use to learn what rules govern access to Microsoft Outlook and the Microsoft 365 suite.
